Do You Still Have to Clean Gutters If You Have Gutter Guards?

Yes. Even with gutter guards installed, your gutters still need cleaning and periodic inspection.

Gutter guards can significantly reduce the amount of leaves, twigs and larger debris entering your gutters, but they do not create a maintenance-free gutter system.

Fine sediment, dust, seeds, moss and broken-down organic material can still collect on top of the guard or gradually build up inside the gutter underneath it. Downpipe entrances can also become restricted over time.

For homes around Hobart, Kingston and Southern Tasmania, particularly properties surrounded by established trees or bushland, this is something worth keeping an eye on.

What can build up when you have gutter guards?

One of the most common misconceptions is that if the mesh looks reasonably clean from the ground, the gutter underneath must also be clean.

Unfortunately, that isn't always the case.

Depending on the type of gutter guard and the surrounding environment, we may find:

  • fine dirt and sediment along the bottom of the gutter

  • small leaves, seeds and organic material

  • moss or plant growth

  • debris collecting around gutter outlets

  • material sitting on top of the gutter guard

  • blocked or partially restricted downpipe entrances

Over time, organic material can break down into a much finer layer that is able to get through or around some gutter guard systems.

Can my gutters still overflow with gutter guards installed?

Yes.

Gutter guards can help reduce larger blockages, but overflowing gutters can still occur if water cannot move freely through the system.

For example, debris sitting on top of the mesh may slow water entering the gutter. Sediment underneath the guard may reduce the available space for water, while material around an outlet can restrict drainage into the downpipe.

Roof valleys and other areas carrying larger volumes of rainwater can also require particular attention during heavy Tasmanian rain.

If you notice water flowing over the edge of your gutters during rain, having gutter guards doesn't necessarily mean the gutter itself is clear.

Common question: How often should gutters with gutter guards be cleaned?

There isn't one schedule that suits every property.

A home in suburban Hobart with few nearby trees may require less frequent attention than a property in Kingston or another bushland-edge area surrounded by mature vegetation.

The right maintenance interval can depend on:

  • nearby trees and vegetation

  • the type of gutter guard

  • roof design and pitch

  • moss and organic growth

  • exposure to wind and storms

  • the condition of the guttering and downpipes

  • whether rainwater is being collected

An inspection can help determine what is actually happening inside your gutter system rather than relying on a fixed cleaning schedule.

Do gutter guards need to be removed for cleaning service?

Sometimes.

Different gutter guards are installed in different ways. Certain systems allow reasonable access to the gutter, while others may need sections to be carefully lifted or removed before the gutter can be properly cleaned.

This is also why cleaning gutters fitted with gutter guard can involve more labour than cleaning an open gutter system.

The appropriate method should be determined after looking at the guard, roof and level of build-up rather than automatically removing the entire system.

What about bushfire preparation?

Keeping roof and gutter areas free from accumulated leaf debris is also particularly relevant for Tasmanian properties near bushland.

The Tasmania Fire Service recommends clearing leaf debris from roofs and gutters as part of preparing a property for bushfire.

Gutter guards can help reduce larger leaves entering the gutter, but dry material can still accumulate on top of the mesh, around roof valleys or in other areas of the roof drainage system.

Have gutter guards? Don't assume the gutters are clean.

Gutter guards are useful, but they should be viewed as a way of reducing gutter maintenance — not eliminating it completely.

If you're unsure what is underneath your gutter guards, especially if you have noticed overflowing water, moss, plant growth or haven't had the system checked for some time, a professional inspection can provide a much clearer picture.
