Yes. Gutters can still become blocked and overflow even when gutter guards are installed.
Gutter guards are designed to reduce the amount of leaves, twigs and larger debris entering the gutter, but they do not guarantee that the entire roof drainage system will stay clear.
Fine sediment, seeds, moss, decomposed organic material and debris around outlets can still restrict water flow. In some cases, leaves can also collect on top of the gutter guard itself and stop rainwater from entering the gutter efficiently.
For homes around Hobart, Kingston and Southern Tasmania, especially properties surrounded by mature trees or bushland, gutter guards should be considered part of a maintenance system — not a replacement for gutter maintenance.
Why can gutters still overflow with gutter guards?
There are several common reasons.
| Common Problem | What Happens | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Leaves build up on top of the gutter guard | Leaves, twigs and organic material can sit on top of the mesh even when the guard prevents them from entering the gutter. | During heavy rain, this material can slow water passing through the guard and cause water to run over the edge instead of flowing into the gutter. |
| 2. Fine sediment collects underneath | Dust, roof grit, pollen, seeds, fine leaves and decomposed organic matter can gradually work their way into the gutter. | Over time, this material can settle along the bottom and reduce the clear space available for water to flow. |
| 3. Gutter outlets become restricted | Debris can collect around the point where the gutter connects to the downpipe, even if the rest of the gutter looks relatively clean. | If water cannot move freely into the downpipe, the gutter may fill faster than it drains and overflow during rain. |
| 4. Downpipes can still become blocked | Gutter guards protect the gutter opening, but they do not automatically protect the entire downpipe system. | Fine material, organic build-up or debris can still create restrictions inside the downpipe and reduce drainage capacity. |
What about roof valleys?
Roof valleys can carry a significant amount of rainwater because water from multiple roof sections is directed into one area.
During heavy rain, this concentrated flow needs to enter the gutter quickly.
If leaves or debris have collected around the gutter guard near the valley, water may simply travel across the top of the mesh and over the edge.
This is one reason some overflow problems only become obvious during heavier rain.
Signs your gutter guards may not be working properly
You may need to have the system checked if you notice:
water spilling over the gutter during rain
water running behind the gutter
moss or plants growing around the gutter line
leaves sitting permanently on the mesh
staining on exterior walls
unusually slow drainage
water pooling near downpipe entrances
sections of gutter guard lifting or becoming damaged
These signs do not always mean the gutter guard itself is faulty.
The problem may be inside the gutter, around the outlet, within the downpipe or elsewhere in the drainage system.
Can you tell from the ground?
Not always.
This is one of the challenges with gutter guards.
A homeowner may look up and see a relatively clean mesh surface, while underneath there may still be sediment, moss or organic build-up.
The actual condition of the gutter is often much clearer once the system is safely accessed and inspected.
Do gutter guards need to be removed?
Sometimes.
It depends on the type of guard, how it has been installed and how much material has accumulated underneath.
Some systems allow access without full removal, while others may require sections to be carefully lifted or temporarily removed.
This is why gutter guard cleaning can sometimes involve more labour than cleaning an open gutter.
Gutter guards reduce maintenance — they don't eliminate it
A good gutter guard system can reduce the amount of large debris entering your gutters and may help reduce how often cleaning is required.
But it cannot guarantee:
completely clean gutters
unrestricted outlets
clear downpipes
no sediment
no moss
no overflow
Periodic cleaning and inspection still matter.
