Clogged gutters are deep cleaned by removing accumulated debris, clearing remaining loose material, washing the internal gutter channel and checking water flow through accessible outlets. An inspection afterwards helps identify visible damage or drainage problems that cleaning alone cannot resolve.
If your gutters overflow whenever it rains, you may wonder whether removing the leaves will be enough.
The answer depends on what is inside the gutter—and how well the system drains once it is clean.
For Hobart homeowners, understanding the process makes it easier to choose a suitable service and know what to expect from the work.
Why clogged gutters may need a deeper clean
Leaves and twigs are often the most obvious part of a blockage. Beneath them, gutters can also hold fine dirt, decomposed plant material and sediment.
Lifting out the larger debris may expose a wet layer along the bottom of the channel. That remaining material needs attention, particularly around outlets and areas where water collects.
Manufacturer LYSAGHT recommends removing gutter debris, washing with a hose and using a soft-bristled brush for stubborn dirt before rinsing again. This supports a cleaning process that addresses both accumulated material and the gutter surface.
A deeper clean may be worth considering if:
Your gutters repeatedly overflow during rain.
Plants or grass are growing from the gutter.
Previous cleaning removed leaves but left substantial dirt behind.
You can see debris around downpipe openings.
Your gutters have not been maintained for some time.
These signs justify an assessment. Overflow can also have causes other than a blockage.
How our Complete 3-Stage gutter cleaning works
At TAS Roof & Gutter Cleaning, our Complete 3-Stage Gutter Cleaning + Inspection combines debris removal, air cleaning, internal washing and a water-flow test. The work covers accessible areas within the agreed quotation.
Before cleaning: assess the property and access
The process begins with reviewing the roof height, access, gutter condition and any reported leaks or overflow.
Gutter guards, enclosed sections and rainwater tank connections can affect how the work is carried out. Mention these when requesting a quote so the proposed service accounts for them.
Stage 1: remove leaves and larger debris
Accumulated leaves, sticks and larger material are removed from accessible gutters.
Removing this material first opens the channel and exposes the gutter underneath. It also reduces the amount of solid debris that could otherwise be carried towards an outlet during washing.
Stage 2: clear remaining loose material with air cleaning
Air cleaning follows the initial debris removal to clear smaller loose particles from accessible gutter sections.
This prepares the channel for the washing stage. Compacted dirt and attached residue may still require further cleaning.
Stage 3: wash the gutter interior and test water flow
The inside of the gutter is washed to remove remaining dirt and organic residue.
Water flow is then checked through accessible sections and outlets. The test helps show whether water moves towards the outlet or remains in parts of the gutter.
For example, a section that still holds water after cleaning may need its alignment or drainage assessed.
A flow test shows how the accessible system drains under the test conditions. It does not prove that every downpipe or underground stormwater pipe is clear.
After cleaning: inspect and explain the findings
With the build-up removed, the underlying gutter is easier to assess.
Visible rust, deteriorated joints, damaged sections or standing water may indicate a need for further work. Our inspection covers accessible areas, with photographs or videos provided where practical.
Cleaning and repairs are separate services. If an issue is found, the next step can be discussed before additional work is arranged.
Standard gutter cleaning or Complete 3-Stage cleaning?
The appropriate service depends on the condition of your gutters and what you want included.

Standard cleaning may suit routine debris removal. The Complete service is worth considering where there is substantial sediment, persistent overflow or a need to assess the visible condition after cleaning.
Your written quotation confirms the scope for your property.
Does deep gutter cleaning include unblocking downpipes?
Checking an accessible gutter outlet is different from clearing a blockage deep inside a downpipe.
Debris can restrict the opening at the gutter, but a drainage problem may also be farther along the pipe or underground.
Our Complete service includes a flow test at accessible outlets. Full internal downpipe clearing is not automatically included or guaranteed. A blockage beyond the accessible cleaning area may require a separate assessment by a plumber or drainage specialist.
Tell us if water backs up at a particular downpipe, so that concern can be considered when preparing your quote.
What happens if you have gutter guards?
Gutter guards affect access to the channel beneath them.
Depending on the system, sections may need to be lifted or removed before the gutter can be thoroughly cleaned. Removal and reinstallation can involve additional labour, which should be allowed for in the quotation.
Send a ground-level photo of the guard if you have one available.
What if your gutters feed a rainwater tank?
Tell your cleaner about the tank connection before work begins.
Building Standards Tasmania recommends diverting the tank inlet away from the tank before gutters are hosed out. This helps prevent cleaning runoff from carrying loosened material into the stored water. The appropriate arrangements should be agreed before washing starts.
Common questions about deep gutter cleaning
Will a deep clean stop my gutters overflowing?
It can help when accumulated debris is restricting drainage. If overflow continues, the cause may include poor gutter fall, damaged components, insufficient drainage capacity or a blockage elsewhere in the system. Further assessment may be needed.
Do clogged gutters need high-pressure washing?
High pressure is not automatically necessary. The method should suit the gutter material, condition and manufacturer’s guidance. LYSAGHT’s maintenance advice describes hose washing and a soft-bristled brush for stubborn dirt.
Does deep cleaning remove rust or repair leaks?
Cleaning can expose corrosion and leaking areas previously concealed by debris. It does not restore metal lost to rust or repair a failed joint. Those issues need a separate repair or restoration assessment.
Is internal gutter cleaning the same as exterior gutter washing?
No. Internal cleaning addresses the channel that carries rainwater. Washing the visible outside face of the gutters or fascia is a different task and should be specified separately if required.
