Gutter guard is often sold as the permanent solution to blocked gutters.
Install it once, stop leaves from entering, and never clean your gutters again—or so the promise goes.
Unfortunately, the reality can be very different.
A properly selected and professionally installed gutter guard may reduce the amount of large debris entering your gutters. However, it does not make your gutter system maintenance-free. In some homes, poorly installed, damaged or neglected gutter guard can hide serious problems and make gutter cleaning considerably more difficult and expensive.
Underneath the mesh, fine debris may be turning into thick mud. Water may be sitting inside the gutter. Downpipe outlets may be blocked. Rust may be developing where nobody can see it.
By the time water begins overflowing, the damage may already be well underway.
Here is why your gutter guard could be causing more problems than it solves—and what you should do about it.
Does Gutter Guard Completely Stop Gutters from Blocking?
No.
Most gutter guard systems are designed to stop larger leaves, twigs and some pests from entering the gutter. They cannot prevent every type of debris from getting through.
Fine material can still enter through or underneath the mesh, including:
Dust
Roof grit
Pollen
Seeds
Pine needles
Small gum leaves
Moss
Lichen
Insect matter
Decomposing organic particles

Over time, this material can combine with rainwater and form a dense layer of mud along the bottom of the gutter.

1. Gutter Guard Can Hide Debris and Mud
One of the greatest risks of gutter guard is that it hides what is happening inside the gutter.
Without a guard, leaves and obvious blockages can usually be seen during a visual inspection. Once mesh covers the gutter, the homeowner may assume that everything underneath is clean.
In reality, small particles can continue to pass through the openings.
Leaves sitting on top of the guard may also break down into smaller fragments. Rain then washes this material through the mesh and into the gutter.

2. Trapped Moisture Can Increase the Risk of Corrosion
Metal gutters are designed to collect water and move it quickly towards the downpipes.
They are not designed to remain filled with wet organic material.
When mud, leaves and debris sit against the internal surface of a gutter, they can trap moisture for extended periods. Areas that remain constantly damp may begin to show staining, coating deterioration or corrosion.
The risk can be greater when:
The gutter does not have the correct fall
Water pools in low sections
Downpipe outlets are partly blocked
Wet debris is pressed against the metal
The gutter surface has already been scratched or damaged

3. Water May Flow Over the Guard Instead of Into the Gutter
During light rain, water may pass through clean gutter mesh without an obvious problem.

When the mesh becomes covered with leaves, moss, dirt or fine debris, water may struggle to enter the gutter quickly enough. Instead, it can travel across the top of the guard and overflow over the gutter edge.

Gutters exist to carry roof water away from the building. When debris or an obstructed guard reduces that flow, the protection offered by the entire drainage system is compromised.
4. Gutter Guard Can Conceal Blocked Downpipe Outlets
The gutter guard may cover the gutter, but the downpipe outlet underneath can still become blocked.
Fine leaves, seeds and sediment can move along the gutter until they collect around the outlet. A small blockage may gradually become a dense plug of organic matter.
Because the outlet is hidden beneath the guard, the problem may not be detected during a basic ground-level inspection.
Common signs of a restricted downpipe include:
Water overflowing from one section of gutter
Water spilling during moderate rain
Gurgling or unusual drainage sounds
Water remaining in the gutter after rain
Damp areas near the building
Staining on the gutter or fascia
Little or no water emerging from the downpipe

Cleaning the top of the mesh alone will not solve a blockage underneath it. The system may need to be opened so that the outlet, gutter channel and downpipe flow can be properly inspected.
5. Poor Installation Can Damage the Roof or Restrict Drainage
Not every gutter guard system is suitable for every roof.
Problems can occur when gutter guard is installed without considering:
Roof material

Gutter profile
Roof drainage capacity
Existing gutter condition
Overflow provisions
Compatible metals and fasteners
Manufacturer requirements
Poor installation may create gaps, loose sections or low points that trap debris. Mesh that is stretched incorrectly can sag into the gutter. Fixings may loosen, corrode or damage roof components.
Some systems are fitted under roof tiles or attached to metal roof sheets. Incorrect installation around these areas may interfere with water flow or create locations where debris and moisture collect.

6. Cheap Plastic, Foam and Brush Guards Can Create Additional Problems
Not all gutter protection products work in the same way.

7. Gutter Guard Makes Proper Cleaning More Labour-Intensive
A standard open gutter can usually be cleared by removing the debris, cleaning the gutter channel and testing the flow.
A gutter covered by fixed mesh is more complicated.

Can Plants Grow Through Gutter Guard?
Yes.
Seeds can pass through small openings or lodge in debris sitting on the mesh. Once enough soil-like material accumulates and remains damp, weeds, grass and even small tree seedlings may begin growing.
Visible plants are usually a sign that the gutter has not been properly cleaned for a considerable period.
Their roots can:
Bind debris together
Restrict water flow
Enter joins and outlets
Hold additional moisture

Removing the visible plant is not enough. The roots, compacted debris and mud underneath also need to be cleared.
